Whilst in the holothingy, I somehow got separated from the group and found myself all alone on a waterfall. I couldn't find my way out again so decided to leave SL. For me, it still is a confusing and instable environment. OK - I'm not the most expert virtual user, but I'm certainly more versatile than a lot of my students/potential students. For me a tool has to be easy to master (sort of fool-proof) and reliable, otherwise the frustration level is easily reached. I must admit I'm finding the whole tools and tricks sessions badly-structured and I think I'm missing some basic info.
The blogging session is certainly better organised. I'm sort of getting my way round in that, albeit with some small problems.Lindsayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10418430137337786468noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2323893043663546285.post-38359093404330087602008-02-01T00:13:00.000+02:002008-02-01T01:39:00.500+02:00Second Life Event on Friday, the 25thLast Friday, a group of about 10-12 people met in Second Life at English Village. Dave Winet led the way. We went to the holodeck of English Village.

The holodeck of English Village is a single room which has a few pictures on the wall. When you click on the pictures, the room starts filling with these scenes. We tried the garden as you can see on the picture, then the barn and then the bus stop.

Dave mentioned that this is a great place to be with a bunch of students because you cant get lost since you stay all together in one room. So we had a few assignments, which as he explained could be similar to what you do with your learners.

The first was to group around the bench for a group picture. Then we learned to use the camera controls. They help you to view yourself and your group from the front so that you can take snapshots.

Then the next assignment was in the barn. We were asked to put clothes on which are typically put on in a barn. When I asked the others whether anybody had a pair of Wellingtons which he or she could share, they all started laughing a lot. Yes, in America the expression Wellingtons is not known.

Then we all started laughing so much, when I accidentally clicked on the holodeck link for the busstop. Just as we were all dressed up for the barn, the scene changed to the bus stop and one of the participants kind of got locked up in the bus. She didnt know how to open the door and asked to be released. Oh, I was laughing my head off.Heike Philphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03770570734418141999noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2323893043663546285.post-87727520942892330452008-01-29T22:37:00.000+02:002008-01-29T22:49:15.687+02:00EVO WorkshopsDear All,

I signed up for three workshops in EVO: Teaching Technology in Adult ESL, Tipps&Tricks and Lesson Planning and Design.

It is quite different from the viewpoint of organisation and operation as what we had in Lancelot. Especially because EVO is using Yahoo Groups which are for me personally not so friendly to use. Foremost the messages system where you have bunch of different messages with different headings and you don't quite know where is the beginning and where the end.

The impression I got is from Lesson Planning and Design because it is simple and they are using Wiki which is quite clear and easy for beginners. In the other workshop I am struggling a little bit with too many data or something I can't even define properly. I will have to evaluate it more in order to know what doesn't fit. Or maybe I will find out that everything is perfect, who knows :)

Anyway, just wanted to give a little feedback althought I only have little data for now. I did almost all tasks for Week 1 except for Voicethread tasks where you have to leave a voice message (kind of hesitating on doing that but hopefully confronting it soon :). In the Lesson Planning and Design we were dealing with some introductory technical set ups and commenting some questions about planning a lesson, so that was good.

I hope I will be able to give you more feedback soon.

Cheers, EveAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2323893043663546285.post-70156015657285540552008-01-24T09:20:00.000+02:002008-01-24T10:06:49.248+02:00Second Life Event planned Friday and SundayThe Tips & Tricks'ler will meet in Second Life. I believe they will meet on EduNation, since this is where study.com's headquater is. They are actually neighbours across to our building. So, this will be nice.

The following is Dave's message.
1) Here are the links to the two live sessions we had last week:http://tinyurl.com/2gkxpk
http://tinyurl.com/2fs5r6(Note: sometimes the recordings loads immediately. If it doesn't, wait and try a bit later. You can use the slider to skip over stuff or replay it.)
2) ASSIGNMENT #2:Download and install Second Life (www.secondlife.com) . Then add me (David Delling) as a friend in SL or (even better) send your SL name to this YG and then everyone can add you as a friend. We will meet in WizIQ before going into SL, on Friday GMT 8 pm athttp://tinyurl.com/26l2qqand on Sunday GMT 6 pm athttp://tinyurl.com/ywma4eHeike Philphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03770570734418141999noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2323893043663546285.post-40857947561631330712008-01-23T18:56:00.000+02:002008-01-24T10:09:17.470+02:00WiZiQI also logged into wiziq yesterday, as the possibilities seem great. However, I wasn't actually able to access a virtual classroom. So, I've now got this account and not sure (as with many tools) how I can effectively use it. I definitely will try and listen to the recording of the second live session. And, my task this week in the blogging group is to create my own blog...still thinking about that. Will let you know when I realise that.Lindsayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10418430137337786468noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2323893043663546285.post-63008291340977962812008-01-23T08:20:00.000+02:002008-01-24T10:10:33.339+02:00Recording for Tips & Tricks Kick-off No. 2 is availableThe Kick-off no. 2 took place in WiziQ, a flash-based free of charge solution with a very nice user interface. The recording can be found here http://tinyurl.com/36hj8u. An intriguing session and I am sure that the audio isnt as bad as it is in the recording. My experience with flash-based recordings is that the tracks of the recordings very rarely match up and sometimes sound as if it was spoken minutes apart. But this is not the real thing. Well, I am not sure. It certainly is a nice tool with a high quality whiteboard, webcam feature, text chat etc.

When you listen to the recording, dont expect a structured program. It is a get-to-gether for socialising purposes and there are elongated breaks of nobody talking and some backgroud street noises or people breathing. But not a lot of talking.

What is quite funny is the discussion about the webcam. Dave never showed his face and pointed the webcam outside the window, sitting in an Internet café. It was a nice view of people passing by and he showed us the great blue skyp in California in winter. After being prompted by some participants, that they cant see his face and that they felt the webcam wasnt working, he then pointed out that he doesn't want to show his face because he didn't think he was good looking enough. Lateron though, Dave gives an elaborate speech about the importance of using a webcam in class, how good it is to see a face and a few issues that have to do with positioning of the webcam so that you seem to be looking at the audience and not at your computer. He also welcomes the second person with an excited: Good to see you and commments on the great lip-sink of an Australian teacher (sorry forgot the name) when talking from London. He sounds also excited to see Hala with her traditional head covering and enthusiastically comments on her beautiful smile. Yet we never see Dave's smile.

There seems to have been a Kick-off No. 1 but I cant find the recording. This Kick-off seemed to have been the Thursday around the 17th. Dave talks about it but no message as of yet.

Great to see and experience WiziQ which is free of charge. Not sure whether it stays free of charge since it is called Beta and the company who produced WiziQ seems to be a software development company Sikhya Solutions, LLC in the US. So it is not a University or so who provides these services free of charge. But who knows it might stay free and it does not seem to have any limitations in the no. of participants. Vyew also is the same. By the way, Vyew has Video and Audio now. Great tool. In both cases the general missing feature of flash-based solutions is the co-browsing. You can paste link in the text chat which will open a browser window on the participants PC similar to pasting a link in Skype text chat or so. But you cannot actually display and annotate webpages and only hope the participants see the website.

I can recommend watching the recording. It is rather lengthy though with loooonnng breaks of nobody talking.Heike Philphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03770570734418141999noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2323893043663546285.post-44672007245925118032008-01-21T14:51:00.001+02:002008-01-24T10:11:06.680+02:00Week 3 Update on tipps and tricks/ ppt sessionAnother live online event missed!

This time it was called the Kick off Tips and Tricks and was said to have been in a software called Wiziq.com. The event was to take place around our Sunday lunchtime and it was posted Saturday evening. Phew. You can imagine that I am not happy about this.
http://www.wiziq.com/tutorsession/session.aspx?JuX%2bgH%2b2Gbb1of0xq48SEkBenD%2bk9BRIOpLuv7fbeUcORrPkQ4WL%2b3VI4H0pWDplxEHSuz7qQj0%3d

These are the session notes and after sign in there is a link for the recording which does not work. No live online events are scheduled
as of yet, which is kind of weird because this is the only
session focusing on synchronous delivery in language training
and if you compare the bloggers's session, their calender is
full of chats and skype casts and also the kick-off meeting
was not announced by David, unless of course I missed this
vital info.
This is how I have know Dave for long time, a very laid back
and relaxed facilitator, who gets a group of people together
and then waits what happens.... so let's see what group
dynamic will happen.

2) PowerPoint with Kent Matsueda (62 members)
The first couple of ppts are available now and they are designed
to instruct the application MS PowerPoint. So far nothing that
would strike me.Heike Philphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03770570734418141999noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2323893043663546285.post-197154151364143442008-01-10T10:04:00.000+02:002008-01-16T02:18:42.128+02:00Thanks for the invitation, MohammadHi Mohammad,

Thanks for the invite. It is amazing how easy it is to post on a blog. Actually the general invite link of Google allows me to create an own blog within seconds. I didnt really want that, but..

Well, my general blog is on the Kolabora Homepage and the last time I posted was about a year ago just before the LANCELOT craze started. If you are interested in some of the blogs I wrote before, then feel free to browse: http://www.kolabora.com/experts/heike_philp.htm

I am looking forward to continuing to post again. It is not easy but great fun. Robin Good was my teacher on how to blog and he made me rewrite one blog three times until I got it right, phew. He is a tough trainer.

So, looking forward to EVO. So far, no events have been scheduled by David Winet as of yet. All emails are simple introductory emails (Tipps and Tricks Session) and also the ppt one has not started. Here again Kent Matsuedas funny podcast link: http://kanazawee.blogspot.com/ which he created when he taught English in Japan. Great podcasts, fun to listen to.Heike Philphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03770570734418141999noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2323893043663546285.post-45597046997858186342008-01-10T00:42:00.000+02:002008-01-24T10:13:08.794+02:00EVO Interest Group (EVO IG) has started...

Hi Sabrina, Daniela, Mohammad, Lindsay and Eve,

I am thrilled that you planned to attend these fabulous free of

charge sessions and am sure that we can all learn a lot.

My impression of the previous years, that they are well

worth the effort (even lots of emails - sigh) but that one

can learn lots.

So here is our little EVO interest group....

Sabrina will join the ppt course

Daniela will join the Getting Started with Drama in your classroom and the ppt course

Mohammad will join the session on blogging and the ppt course

Eve will join the Effective lesson planning and Integrating Technologies in Adult ESL

Lindsay wants to join the ppt and ?

Brigitte was still undecided

I personally have joined the Tipps and Tricks (D Winet) and the ppt course.

May I suggest that we share important dates and events using

this distribution list (just click on 'Reply to all') and since

Mohammad is a great blogger, perhaps we could use his

blog to keep posting our impressions to share with the group?

This is fabulous indeed.
